Shoppers line up at the new thrift store - the number of shoppers has doubled at our new location!
Shoppers present a picture I.D. at our check out desk and are provided with a 30 day shopping card.
Donations of gently used clothing and small household items can be delivered to the community center after store hours. If you have a lot of items - more than a bag or two please call ahead to make sure we have space and then to arrange a time to deliver. When you make a donation of items to the Thrift Store you will receive a receipt for tax purposes.
Did You Know:
Since our store is a Free Thrift Store it doesn't turn a profit or support the cost of running the store. The shoppers that come to our store are on a very limited budget and find the store a way to help make ends meet. This is all to say that we also need your financial support to keep the store open and available for those we serve.
Food Pantry
The Food Pantry service is open from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., Monday to Friday.
The Food Pantry is here to help make ends meet with a 3 day supply of groceries. By following some simple guidelines we will be able to meet the needs that you have a lot quicker.
The Food Pantry serves families that live within our service area = 0 Washington St. to 3000 Troy St; 500 East St. to 5100 Emerson (if you do not live in this area call 211 and they will locate a Food Pantry close to your home.).
There are a few documents that you will need to bring with you when you come to our Food Pantry:
Picture I.D., Social Security cards, or Birth Certificates of everyone in household (first time only).
A proof of address is required every time. This is usually a simple piece of mail post dated within 4 weeks or a lease agreement (rent receipts will not work). We would be glad to send you a letter to use as your proof of address, if needed.
Feel free to call ahead and we will be glad to answer any questions you may have.
Breaking the Cycle of Poverty through Skill Building
Survival Skills (Life Skills Training):
Talking with your landlord, children or spouse is not always easy. If you have never taken a workshop on personal communication it can turn out explosive! The life skills training program, Survival Skills, focuses on important basic skills: personal communication, personal health, nutrition, money management, child management, legal rights, community resources, goal setting, coping with crisis and going back to school/work. Each topic is addressed in a three hour interactive workshop. The students bond as a group and find support in each other's stories, they are not alone! Upon completion of the ten workshops, certificates are presented during a graduation program that the students create. As you can tell from the pictures, graduation day is a big day and often seen as the first day of a new life with a new attitude!
Women's Program
Survival Skills for Women in Indiana was first offered at Fletcher Place over 10 years ago! Since then, this basic life skills program has spread throughout the state, known for its success in empowering women to take control of their lives and for being cost effective. The women in this program are struggling to make it in a tough economy. Often times low education and poor job skills keep them from finding success. As they progress through the program a plan of action is developed and soon they are becoming proactive instead of reactive. Computer classes are available for those who attend the life skills class.
Men's Program
The Men's life skills program empowers men to take control of their lives in a positive way. This class is currently taking place in our dining hall immediately after breakfast. Many of the men who participate in this class are between jobs and looking for a way to get back in the workforce.
Computer Skills = Job Skills:
The new community center building has a brand new computer lab . Students can take a basic introduction to computer class and then a more intense class on Word and Excel that includes creating their own resume. The first level class is geared for students who have never been officially trained on computer use - mouse and key board skills are developed along with confidence in the fact that they can't hurt the computer.
Computer classes are currently reserved for our life skills students and are at no cost to the student. Our hope is to match life skills with job skills that lead to success.
Literacy Training:
Lights, Camera, Learning! Our literacy classes are taught by volunteers trained through Indy Reads. The classes use workbooks and video to teach reading skills with great success. The classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students in this program are able to use our computers for typing skills - reinforcing letter recognition while working towards mastering reading at a level that will enable them to take our life skills and computer classes
